Traditional Rummy Rules

The objective of Rummy is to dispose of all the cards in your hand before your opponents. You do this by arranging as many as possible of the cards in your hand into sets or runs of cards:

A set consists of 3 or more cards of the same rank
OR

A run consists of 3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit
OR

The Play

You, and all other players in the rummy game, are dealt 10 cards. The remaining cards are placed face down on the table, forming the stock pile and one card is placed next to the stock to form the discard pile (face up).

At the beginning of your turn you must draw a card either from the stock pile (cards face down) or from the discard pile (cards face up) and add it to your hand.

If you have formed a matched set or a run (known as a meld), you may lay them down on the table face up. If you do not wish to lay down a meld, you then discard one card, face up, onto the discard pile.

If the stock runs out, the discard pile is shuffled and placed face down to form a new stock pile. The card discarded by the player who drew the last card of the old stock is placed face up beside the new stock to start the new discard pile.

During your turn, you may add one or more cards from your hand to any meld that has already been laid down on the table. Thus, if threes are showing, you may add the fourth three; if are showing, you may add or , or for example.

Remember you have two ways to win in a Traditional Rummy game, "Going out" and "Going Rummy".

Going Out - you win if you are the first player to dispose of all your cards in stages.

Going Rummy - You can "Go Rummy" when you dispose of all your cards in your hand at once, without previously having put down any melds or cards.
