Online Oklahoma Rummy Strategy

We have compiled these guidelines to help you learn Oklahoma Gin Rummy strategy. You may wish to read and use them to help you win online rummy games on 32Red Rummy.

Deck

In Oklahoma Gin Rummy the game is played with a single deck of 52 cards. On that basis you may need to be flexible as to your choice of melds since a card that has been picked up from the discard pile may not be available to you again in the game.

Drawing

Drawing the right cards when playing online Oklahoma Gin Rummy is a major factor in determining the outcome of the game.

When drawing a card at the beginning of the game, it may be advisable to pick up a card from the stock pile rather then the discard pile, so disguising what cards you have in your hand. Also, as the rummy game progresses, since the cards on top of the discard pile are cards that your online Oklahoma Gin Rummy players don’t need, if you draw a card from the stock pile, you might be preventing them from forming melds of their own.

Discard

When throwing away a card your first priority is to dispose of cards that are of no use to you and, ideally, cards that are of no use to your online opponent. It may be worth making a note as to which cards your online opponents have previously discarded.

Some players tend to discard high-value cards to reduce their potential deadwood count. One tactic, although risky in terms of deadwood, may be to take advantage of that, and form melds of higher cards that have been discarded in that fashion.

Rummy Opponents

Try to pay attention to the cards that your online Oklahoma Gin Rummy opponents pick from the discard pile and which cards they discard. You may find out some information that helps you in learning what cards your opponents may have in their hand.

High & Low Draws

An Oklahoma Gin Rummy game tends to be won by a player at a point at which around half of the cards have been dealt. Therefore in many ways it may be best to draw high-value cards at the beginning of the game, hoping to obtain the matching ones, to form melds, as the game progresses.

One tactic, as this point in the game approaches, is to discard high-value cards (so reducing your potential deadwood) by either replacing them with low-value cards from the discard pile or picking a card from the stock pile.

Similarly, should you suspect that one of your opponents is about to Knock or Gin, you should pick up a low-value card from the discard pile and discard a higher-value card, to reduce the total count of your deadwood.

Knock

During an Oklahoma Gin Rummy Tournament, it may be good strategy to accumulate points by Knocking, rather than waiting to go Gin. In both tournaments and ring games it may be best to Knock early during the game, to avoid the risk of being a victim of Undercut.

Forming Melds

When forming melds you may wish to concentrate on trying to create four-card sets, rather than consecutive (run) melds. By doing this you may prevent your online Rummy opponents from laying off their deadwood on your melds.

Try to draw and discard cards in a manner that will provide you with a lot of opportunities to complete cards, or pairs of cards into melds. For example: the un-melded cards in your hand are:

, , , . Discarding the will leave you with more opportunities to meld the rest of the cards.

Ring (Cash) Games

In ring games you and your opponents do not accumulate points. You may be more successful in the longer term in Oklahoma Gin Rummy cash games by trying to go Gin since this move rewards you with more cash.
